The collection of songs on ‘Afrodisiac’ were songs Fela and the Nigeria 70 (Later Africa 70) re-recorded at Abbey Road in London in 1971. Originally recorded and released in Nigeria on 45rpm, they were Fela’s first successive hits in the Nigerian music charts. The best known song on 1973’s ‘Afrodisiac’ is ‘Jeun Ko Ku’, a satire about gluttony and Fela’s first major hit in West Africa. In Broken English the title means ‘chop and quench’, which, in turn, means ‘eat and die’ in Standard English.
Folk-minimalists announce vinyl issue for breakthrough album, AnimaliaCaptivating, ethereal and majestic, Mammal Hands (saxophonist Jordan Smart, pianist Nick Smart and drummer and percussionist Jesse Barrett) has carved out a refreshingly original sound from adisparatearray of influences: drawing on spiritual jazz, north Indian, folk and classical music to create something inimitably their own.Hailing from Norwich, one of Britain's most isolated and most easterly cities, they have forged their own path away from the musical mainstream and their unique sound grew out of long improvised rehearsals. All three members contribute equally to the writing process: one that favours the creation of a powerful group dynamic over individual solos. Their recordsare entrancing and beautiful affairs, while their hypnotic live shows have seen them hailed as one of the most exciting bands in Europe as they push their unique line-up to the outer limits of its possibilities.
Habibi Funk gets yet another compilation released in his honour, this time shedding light on the takeoff period in the Libyan synthfunk artist's career: when he had just left his home country to pursue stardom in Egypt and London. Unbridled happiness and sun oozes from this comp, centring on the smash hit, lovers' anthem 'Ayonha', as well as nigh-forgotten earlier gems like 'Shantet Safar' and 'Reet'. Ghostly vocal processing and folk-funk production permeates; 'Maktoub Aleina' in particular is one club classic we won't hold with you forgetting. Now residing back in Cairo, Hamid was more than approving of this release, knowing full well that the tracks on it deserved much more praise than they received back in the day.
Moggi aka Piero Umiliani is one of those forgotten musicians who contributed so much to the making of today's trends and styles thanks to his musical scores and early adoption of electronic instruments. His Moggi project was reserved strictly for this latter vision and 1980's Tra Scienza E Fantascienza (translated as "Between Science And Sciene Fiction") is a gorgeous future jazz LP which has been undoubtedly sampled and twisted by many beat-makers over the years, its dense bursts of brass instruments, percussion and electronic manipulation make for the perfect blend of experimentalism, one that's abstract and yet controlled, sleek in its approach. A masterful reissue.
