Over the past few years, London based DJ and curator Sam Don has shone new light into the Reggae sub-genre of Lovers Rock with his comps 'For the love of You'. His deep, yet deeply accessible selections have opened the ears of many to the genre. With this new compilation 'Just A Touch' Sam shines his torch even deeper, this time through crates of UK Underground Soul. He painstakingly researched and tracking down each producer to bring you some of the sweetest soul cuts that will ever grace your eardrums.Sam Don explains: Whilst the US is most well-known for soul music, the UK has created its own take on the genre, due to the melting pot of cultures and musical styles that makes the UK so special. I didn't 'set out' to make a compilation like this, but one night an idea came to me, and I sketched it out at home with my record collection. When I saw how well these sounds came together, I started my mission to find the people involved with them and 'Just A Touch' was created.
Alongside a tandem release on Unrock featuring the track 'Speaking In Tongues' from the same gig, this new release on Sub Rosa from Dwarfs Of East Agouza captures the Egyptian free improv and psych rock explorers playing live at Les Ateliers Claus in Brussels in 2017. It's instructive that A side track 'Baka Of The Future' is also the opening track from their debut album, because it sounds entirely different on this live version and thus neatly captures the creative forces at play from Maurice Loca's keys and drum machines, Sam Shalabi's electric guitar and Alan Bishop's bass. It's a mesmerising trip with shades of Krautrock underneath the scratchy, unpredictable playing on top.
Its back!......Midnight Drive reissue... 1984, New York City. Clive Stevens (RIP), a UK born saxophonist, producer & writer assembled a staggering cast of international musicians known as 'Brainchild' to record an LP entitled 'Semjase' for Brazilian label Vôo Livre. One track from this obscure LP finds it's way to Daniele Baldelli became a slo mo beach / cosmic electro classic , leading to an Italian 12" issue...."Mystery Man" . Passed away unexpectedly in 2019 - he was a good guy and around up to his death appreciating this reissue.
DRAMABOY self-titled LP is a modern yet nostalgic soundtrack layering ambient pads, dreamy melodies, and hero basslines with soulful boogie, city pop or leftfield analogue rhythms. The album also features Kristian Hamilton's voice on the second track "Stargazer", a LA-based singer who previously collaborated with the likes of Steven Julien, Theophilus London, Tom Trago & Fredfades...
✈︎✈︎ US import ✈︎✈︎Light In The Attic devoted a fair wedge of energy to reissuing the work of Betty Davis, surely one of the greatest of all the 70s funk divas. More than stepping up to the likes of Ruth Copeland and Lyn Collins, Davis went her own way and developed her own smouldering sound. Her confidence might well have been what posed such a threat to the status quo of the music industry at the time, and it positively leaps out of her seminal 1974 album They Say I'm Different. The reissue has been in need of a repress for some time, and its comes intact with a full 20-page booklet which takes you into the heart of the album and Davis' incredible, but all too short-lived legacy.
