Backatcha continues to unearth and reissue Brit-Funk gold. This obscurity from Oneness, a Leicester-based roots reggae band who were persuaded to record and release a lone Brit Funk single, could well be their most potent discovery yet. 'Watching You' is typical of that era of post jazz-funk Brit-funk, with spacey synth sounds, sweet male and female vocals, clipped guitar licks and rubbery bass riding a two-step, electro-influenced groove. As was the case on the hard-to-find original 12", it comes backed by a terrific, dub-influenced 'Version' that layers up the sax and synth sounds while allowing the original groove a chance to breathe. In a word: essential!

With this Ep for Mother Tongue Gerald Mitchell really shows what Soul is all about. The first Los Hermanos Ep on vinyl in over a decade brings it back to Church and then some! From the Gospel tones of the dancefloor smasher ‘Another Day’, to the electric techno-jazz of ‘Binary Funk Infusion’ featuring Bob Rogue [think of Herbie’s Dedication meeting Axis] and finally closing [and melting] with ‘Let Love Live’ featuring the incredible voice of Billy Love…it was definitely worth the wait.
After cutting his teeth playing with Fela in the 70’s and releasing two afrobeat LP’s Kingsley travelled the globe before finding himself in London, it’s here that he laid down 6 distinctive electro-funk tunes inspired by African rhythms and music he’d heard through his travels in the States and in Europe. Originally issued on Kinglsley’s own KAB records in ’85 and according to Kingsley the release was well received at the time, but due to constraints of international marketing the record remained mostly unknown outside of his homeland. Fast-forward and the stage is set for a new global audience to appreciate the distinct sound of KB.
The Wagram label continues to impress us with its well researched collections that have focussed on a wide range of different niche genres and periods. The latest is Disco Music Gems From Vinyl Diggers with ten tunes here that are all gold-standard jams. These are tunes that mix up funk, soul and disco from the 70s and 80s and have been lovingly sought out for your listening pleasure. You may or may not know the tunes in question as they tend towards the lesser-known end of the spectrum and that in part is what makes them so good to hear.
