Première sortie physique pour célébrer son arrivée sur le fameux label Ed Banger Records.Après des premières œuvres sous le nom de Pink Flamingo qui l’ont fait travailler avec Sébastien Tellier & Philippe Zdar, Varnish rejoint Pedro Winter & Ed Banger Records. Pour ses premiers pas chez Ed Banger Records, l'artiste a donc décidé de faire ce qu’il sait faire de mieux : surprendre. Autant musicalement que visuellement. Composé entre 2021 et 2022, son album a toutes les caractéristiques d’une parfaite carte de visite en sept morceaux pour entrer dans l’univers aussi riche que créatif du jeune musicien.Une musique pour les connaisseurs et à la fois accessible à tous, sous la forme d’une pop raffinée où l’on entend de nombreuses influences : du rap, de la bossa, des lignes de synthés électroniques, de 'la surf music', du reggae, porté par le chant et le rap de Varnish, ainsi que de trois invités, le tout accompagné d’une série de courts-métrages.

Sandhills de Toro y Moi est à la fois une tendre lettre d’amour à Columbia, en Caroline du Sud, la ville natale de Chaz Bear, et une acceptation poignante et douce-amère du fait que l’on ne peut jamais vraiment rentrer chez soi. Rappelant Seven Swans de Sufjan Stevens ou la bande originale de Karen O pour Where The Wild Things Are, ces chansons folk-pop entraînantes sont elles-mêmes une sorte de retour, rappelant ses premiers CD faits à la main. Toro y Moi est aujourd’hui une icône de l’indie pop mondialement appréciée. Mais Sandhills, avec son banjo, sa lap steel et son regard émerveillé, admet que l’on ne se débarrasse jamais totalement du blues de l’adolescence. Lyriquement habile et étonnamment déchirant, cet EP est peut-être une brève halte entre les grandes déclarations de Bear, mais il déborde de tripes, de grandes humeurs et d’amour.
