While Dutch electro/techno veteran DJ Overdose's recent releases for Viewlexx and Unknown To The Unknown were devoted to straight-up thrill seeking, this outing on Berceuse Heroique is an altogether more varied prospect. While flipside "Sorry To Disappoint" is a deliciously cheery electro number with distinctive synth-funk overtones, opener "Dead City" is an altogether darker and more disturbed affair. Murky, twisted and clandestine, with jungle style percussion flourishes, black electronics and wild stabs, it's something of twisted, late night treat. A fine EP is completed by Detroiter O.B Ignitt's rework of "Sorry To Disappoint", which re-casts the track as a rolling house groover full of vintage synth work, disco percussion hits and rubbery electric bass notes.

The Schleissen series goes from strength to strength on Emotional Response, inviting another two esteemed luminaries in the field of ambience to indulge themselves on a long side of wax. Matthewdavid is a welcome addition to the series - the West Coast champion has been operating in all kinds of unusual realms for a long time - and he comes to this release with a new project entitled Mindflight. The resulting track "Sonos' loops and folds heavy washes of drone and feedback in a thoroughly stimulating bath of harmony. Firecracker affiliate HOLOVR meanwhile presents three different musings on the dynamics of vintage UK techno, all crooked beat formations and luscious synth strokes gazing into the future.
American dub by way of Ethiopia. First time on vinyl comes this album by Ethiopian singer Ejigayehu Shibabaw aka Gigi - soundwise translated by her husband Bill Laswell giving this album his signature touchBy the time Ejigayehu Shibabaw, a.k.a. Gigi, released her self-titled U.S. debut in 2001, she had already left her native Ethiopia to join forces with bassist and producer Bill Laswell. The album was at once a cry of solidarity for the expatriate Ethiopian community, of which she had become a defining voice, and a shower of sunlight on her homeland for those ignorant of its struggles. It also attracted an unprecedented group of musicians, drawn from Laswell’s Material nexus and beyond—including reedmen Henry Threadgill, Wayne Shorter, and Pharoah Sanders, percussionists Hamid Drake and Karsh Kale, and pianist Herbie Hancock—within a fellowship of Ethiopian talents. Gigi has aged gracefully in a category all its own, having inspired many to funnel their histories into emotional art. When, two years later, Laswell released a mix translation of Gigi, he transplanted its innermost organs with surgical precision in a realm where only the arteries of an intangible soul could find purchase. The result was a counterpart that revealed tattoos from within the original’s skin rather than applying them from without. Gigi herself sanctioned Laswell’s ambient shadows, in which her vocals receded like a dream upon waking. She saw no need to rearticulate messages indelibly recorded for posterity. The release of Illuminated Audio came at a time when Laswell had been excavating hybrid relics of ancient and future-leaning signals alongside other dubterranean travelers on the Axiom label. That Axiom was backed by Island Records founder Chris Blackwell proved fortuitous, for his interest in Gigi would spark the collaboration that would define an era, even as an era would define the collaboration
Daniel Lopatin has long been a mercurial figure in many music worlds: from vaporific eccojams to the leftfield pop of Ford & Lopatin, and the eclectic and esoteric influences of his output as Oneohtrix Point Never. 2020's Magic Oneohtrix Point Never distilled all these styles into a radio-themed retrospective, but it's his latest album Again that truly represents the incredible OPN sound, exploding and examining it at its raw, pure core.Like the alluringly visceral artwork made by artist Matias Faldbakken, Lopatin clenches and crushes sound firmly in his fist, then outstretches it in his palm as he details life condensed into a nonlinear slipstream.Again is a glorious return to abstraction informed by Daniel Lopatin's popstar
BoomBass
