It’s one of the best kept secrets of the Indonesian archipelago. Hidden away on a pop album inspired by The Police, lies ‘Licik’, a deep vocoder funk workout lasting over nine minutes. It’s the first recorded Indonesian song to use the vocoder in such a way.‘Licik’ is a hauntingly unique track and a testament to the quality of some of the best music the archipelago has to offer. Friends 82, consisting of Delly Rollies, Norman Rachman and the vocoder wizard Harry Sabar, wrote and recorded the track on the spot back in 1981. The B-side pays tribute to the original song, with a re-contextualisation of the original by Jakarta-born, Bali-based multi-instrumentalist Dea Barandana.Fully licensed from the songwriter and living legend Harry Sabar, Jiwa Jiwa seeks to offer a platform and hub to build bridges and connect natives of the archipelago and its diaspora around the world, across different generations. Tracks being drum orientated Chicago rhythm tracks with a minimalistic melody. Chez Damier (Anthony Pearson) grew up in Chicago, where he danced at the Warehouse as a youth. He left for Detroit in the 1980s, helping to open the Music Institute and working A&R for Kevin Saunderson's label, KMS. Damier and Trent met while Damier was visiting Chicago and immediately hit it off.Today, Prescription is cited by countless producers as a major influence. "It's a very dub experimental label... sound bites, samples, rhythms, and a lot of ethereal stuff, too," Trent expounds "not to mention. Prescription's embrace of heavy sub-bass". Concludes Trent, "It was ahead of its time, definitely."

Khotin pops up on Vancouver’s excellent Pacific Rhythm for a vinyl release of his 2017 cassette New Tab. These ten tunes are lovely, tranquil synthscapes reminiscent of the recent album by E Ruscha V. The album’s first half is almost wholly devoid of drums, instead encouraging the listener to luxuriate in the charming, airy atmospheres Khotin conjures from his electronics. Imagine a more positive take on the sounds of Huerco S.’ West Mineral Ltd. The grainy recording quality of New Tab will also bring comparisons to the lo-fi house sound of Ross From Friends, Mall Grab et al, and Khotin makes concessions to this in the record’s second half. ‘Fever Loop’ and ‘Health Pack’ are particularly lovely beat jams.

A heady trip through progressive psychedelia, kitsch Italian library music and Brazilian tropicaliaWax Machine is the project of Brazilian-born, Italian/English-raised Lau Ro, who takes a deep dive into their Brazilian heritage on this LP, taking inspiration from 60s tropicalia music and movement and the likes of Os Mutantes, Caetano Veloso and Gal Costa.“Brazil is where I was born and grew up until I was 8 years old, and it's where my family is from. We then immigrated to Europe and I was never able to visit Brazil after that as it's a very expensive flight. Instead I've opted for the next best thing which is connecting with the spirit and culture of Brazil via the medium of music.”The album features a version of Canto De Iemanja from Vinicius De Moraes and Baden Powell's seminal 1966 Brazilian album Os Afro sambas. Canto De Iemanja is about the goddess of the sea Iemanja, a chant Lau has often found themselves singing to the sea in their hometown of Brighton “The ocean is a muse of mine. After almost a decade of EPs and double singles, gaining worldwide recognition, Bristol native and owner of Timedance Omar McCutcheon has finally delivered their debut full-length project as BATU. First released way back in 2011 on one of Nick Anthony Simoncino's fine EPs for Metamatics, 'Jungle Dream' smartly joined the dots between turn-of-the '90s Italian dream house and the more jacking end of late '80s Chicagoan house. It was always ripe for remixing, such was the mixture of attractive musical elements on show, and we can't think of anyone more suited to the task than deep house legend Ron Trent. On the A-side 'Part I' remix, Trent tiptoes the fine line between attractive dreaminess and percussively weighty late-night house voodoo - all layered drums, groovy bass, whispered vocal snippets, languid lead lines and immersive pads. He goes for a more expansive, sunrise-ready sound - complete with fluid, Balearic house keyboard solos, sultry synth strings and sun-kissed chords - on the flipside 'Part II' mix.

The “Serie Pegaso” catalog stems from the need to write music and lyrics that have a strong link with the city of Naples, that speak the same language and tell it through stories, loves and memories. There are countless stories and testimonies of people who left the "land of the sun" to migrate elsewhere in search of fortune and work but not many know that there is a small bird, the “Capinera”, which has instead decided to do the inverted path through a long journey from cold and distant lands to then settle and find a new home on Mount Vesuvius. But there is also another story, between reality and legend, which is that of the most beautiful woman in the neighborhood called by everyone 'A Capinera because of her long and enchanting black hair. She was a widow coveted and desired by all but she will remain faithful to her deceased husband throughout her life. The only source of livelihood for herself and her three children was the smuggling cigarette trade although she could choose and get whatever she wanted thanks to her irresistible beauty. This is what the creators of the Capinera project tell us, and they are: Gianpaolo Della Noce (better known as Dnapoli and half of the acclaimed diggers duo Napoli Segreta, Michele Cesare aka Breakstarr (one of the pillars of the city's beat makers scene) both assisted by the sharp voice of Adriana Salomone. Together with the production team led by Dario di Pace and Raffaele Arcella the result is the nostalgic and exotic Reggae-Pop in Neapolitan colors of "Il Volo" (today in exclusive preview on Spotify) and the sparkling disco infected “Suonno”.

Formed in 2015, Vanishing Twin came together to make an exploratory record that marries English pop with a palette of arkestral sounds. Having previously released a string of conceptual cassettes under the name Orlando, founder Cathy Lucas named the group after her vanishing twin, an identical sister absorbed in utero, when they were both still a cluster of cells.Enlisting the help of producer Malcolm Catto (Heliocentrics, DJ Shadow, The Gaslamp Killer) the band began work at his London studio, Quatermass Sound Lab, last spring. Recording the basis for eight tracks, they blended structure and improvisation in pop songs that describe a personal mythology through the adventures of Lucas's vanished twin. Drawing on sounds outside of the usual pop vocabulary, the group used forgotten drum machines, home-made electronics, vibraphones, tablas, and harp to invoke the esoteric psychedelia of lost soundtracks, radiophonic experiments and minimal music orchestras. In a studio that Catto built for maximum atmosphere and minimum interfere, and crammed with obscure vintage equipment, he brought his own distinctive sonics to the table, informed by outsider jazz, Italian library music and ethnographic field recordings.Vanishing Twin is made up of singer Cathy Lucas (Innerspace Orchestra), drummer Valentina Magaletti (Raime, Tomaga, Uuuu, Neon Neon), bassist Susumu Mukai (Zongamin, Floating Points), library music head Phil M.F.U. (Man From Uranus, Broadcast) on strange sounds, and film maker and visual artist Elliott Arndt on flute and percussion.

Seminal album alert... If this isn't already in your collection, now's the time to get it. Recognised as one of Aphex Twin's most accomplished long players, I Care Because You Do is a comprehensive exploration into the future of electronic music that was penned 17 years ago but doesn't sound dated in any way. Featuring smooth segues from expansive dreamy soundscapes ("The Waxen Pith") to icy breakbeat workouts ("Wax The Nip") at points this is the warmest, cosiest friend you'll ever have. At others it's the most uncompromising foe you'll ever meet. Essential for music lovers.

African Head Charge collects different elements of world music and combines them with a Western sensibility -- but rather than changing them into pop songs the way Peter Gabriel or Jah Wobble might, they work with dub, trippy psychedelia, and trance. The result is spectacular, lending a more organic, song-based feel to the sort of peaceful electronica one would expect from Spring Heel Jack or Mouse on Mars. The dub and reggae influences make the album even more appealing -- "Animal Law" is like electronic dub, and the title track, "Somebody Touch I" is a bright and almost cutesy take on dub and reggae. In any genre, dub, trance, electronica, or world music, In Pursuit of the Shashamane Land would stand up as a spectacular album.

By the time they recorded "Songs of Praise" in 1990, African Head Charge had gone from being an Adrian Sherwood solo project to a fully-fledged band helmed by percussionist Bonjo Ivabinghi Noah. Here reissued to mark the album's 20th birthday, the set remains arguably the group's greatest single work. While rooted in the twin attractions of heavy dub and dense African percussion, the album makes extensive use of a dizzying array of influences, from gospel, steppers reggae and yacht rock, to traditional Arabic music, blues, disco, religious chants and even industrial music. This edition features a handful of decent bonus tracks, but they're unnecessary: the original album is little less than a masterpiece and should reside in every discerning listener's record collection.
