Nigeria 70: Lagos Jump, another essential box of West African dynamite with the emphasis firmly on the dancefloor. From the heavy jazz of Peter King to Bola Johnson’s scratchy Afro funk and the rolling grooves of juju legend Sir Shina Peters, the album captures a rich and unique era in West African music."...a brilliant panorama of the country's popular music in the 1970s" (Pitchfork, 8.5)
The track PSYCHOSE, unreleased to date, was recorded by CORTEX in 1977, for a film whose film was unfortunately destroyed in a fire. The original soundtrack, fortunately saved, has recently been found.
Theo huddles exclusives from his Sound Signature crew on a 90 minute jazz chords x syncopated machine/sampler madness, spanning Specter to Howard Thomas’s H-Fusion and Jason Hogans.Naturally, as massive fans of Howard Thomas and his ‘Captured Entities’ as H-Fusion, we’re drawn to the anxious drums and brooding vibes of the session’s massive highlight ‘Experiment 10’, an ideal example of how to hold tension without “going anywhere”, while Raj Mahal serves a class bit of spangled dub in ‘Hudson’s’, and the drums fiends will get their’s everywhere from Jason Hogans’ frisky bewt ’Surrounded by Trees’, to the slompy soul claps of ‘Janis’ by Sterling Toles. There’s also dusty deep house magic by Ian Fink, collaborator of Omar-S, in the velvet keys and latinate bustle of ‘Moonlite (Duality/Detroit Live Version)’, the purring flex of Jon Dixon on ‘Wind Drifts’, 10 mins of byzantine beatdown from Specter, and Theo chiming in on the set’s early run of syrupy slow cuts with Duminie DePorres with the near-beatless charms of ‘Real Deal’.

After the release of Brazilian Disco Boogie Sounds (FVR098), Favorite Recordings follows-up, this time focusing on its homeland language.Helped by a close connoisseur friend, DJ and collector Charles Maurice presents a fine selection of what he thinks represent best the amazing energy of this specific movement and period. With 10 rare titles, all produced between 1975 and 1984, he shows a perfect picture of what you could find in French record stores at that time;On one hand, tracks by Overdrive, Marché Noir, Didier Makaga or France-Lise, were produced by underground artists and labels from the French Caribbean and African community and also filled with the raw spirit of this Tropical stamping. On the other hand, tracks by Beckie Bell, Kelly, Le Club, or Bernard Guyvan, were released by major labels such as Trëma, Carrere, Disques Vogue, or Pathé Marconi, thanks to confirmed independent producers, acting not only in France, but also in Canada and the US.Today, Favorite Recordings and Charles Maurice are very proud to shed some light again on these gems, and hopefully offer them a new life on your turntable.
